PFOS and PFOA
Notice in response to EPA Drinking Water Health Advisories
for PFOS and PFOA
Litchfield Park, Arizona - On May 19, 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a health advisory regarding levels of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) in drinking water. The EPA health advisory level has been reduced from 400 parts per trillion (PPT) for PFOA, and 200 PPT for PFOS to a blended concentration of 70 PPT. PFOA and PFOS are chemicals which have been released by third parties and do not arise in any way from the activities of Liberty Utilities (Litchfield Park Water & Sewer) Corp. (“Liberty Litchfield Park”).
Liberty Litchfield Park conducts regular sampling and analysis of our water sources to ensure that customers continue to receive drinking water that is in compliance with applicable health and environmental standards. In connection with the development of the new health advisory levels, a number of wells in Liberty Litchfield Park’s service area were tested for PFOA and PFOS. Liberty Litchfield Park has taken immediate action, as recommended by the EPA and endorsed by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), to ensure that our drinking water meets the new EPA health advisory level.
Liberty Litchfield Park will continue performing sampling and analysis on our water in cooperation with state and regulatory authorities and provide further public updates as new information becomes available.
To the extent that you would like more information regarding PFOA, PFOS, their health effects or the basis for the EPA's actions, the EPA's health advisory can be found on their website.
